Then it happened 有一天發生了
That the little boy and his family 小男孩和他的家人
Moved to another house, 搬到了另外一個房子
In another city, 在另外一個城市裡
And the little boy 小男孩
Had to go to another school. 需要去另外一個學校
This school was even bigger 這個學校
Than the other one. 比另外一個更大
And there was no door from the outside 這個學校沒有外面的門
Into his room. 去他的教室
He had to go up some big steps 他需要走些很大的階梯
And walk down a long hall 長長的走廊
To get to his room. 才能到達他的教室
And the very first day 他上學的第一天
He was there, 他在那
The teacher said: 老師說﹕
"Today we are going to make a picture." “今天我們要來畫畫”
"Good!" thought the little boy. “太好了﹗”小男孩心裡想
And he waited for the teacher 他在等老師
To tell what to do. 教他怎麼畫
But the teacher didn't say anything. 但是老師什麼都沒說
She just walked around the room. 她開始在教室走來走去
When she came to the little boy 當她走到小男孩
She asked, "Don't you want to make a picture?" 她問﹕“你不想畫畫嗎﹖”
"Yes," said the lttle boy. “想”小男孩說
"What are we going to make?" “但我們今天要畫什麼﹖”
"I don't know until you make it," said the teacher. “如果你不畫，我不知道你要畫什麼呀”老師說
"How shall I make it?" asked the little boy. “我要怎麼畫﹖”小男孩問
"Why, anyway you like," said the teacher. “你要怎麼畫都可以呀﹗”老師說
"And any color?" asked the little boy. “任何顏色都可以嗎”小男孩問
"Any color," said the teacher. “是的，任何顏色”老師說
"If everyone made the same picture, “如果大家都畫一樣
And used the same colors, 用一樣的顏色
How would I know who made what, 我怎麼會知道
And which was which?" 是誰畫什麼呢﹖”
"I don't know," said the little boy. “我不知道”小男孩說
And he began to make a red flower with a green stem. 然後，他開始畫一朵紅色的花加綠色的莖

On another day 另外一天
When the little boy had opened 小男孩已經自己會
The door from the outside all by himself, 開外面的門進來教室
The teacher said: 老師說﹕
"Today we are going to make something with clay." “我們今天要玩黏土”
"Good!" thought the little boy; “太好了﹗”小男孩心裡想
He liked clay. 他很喜歡黏土
He could make all kinds of things with clay: 他可以用黏土做出很多東西
Snakes and snowmen, 蛇、雪人
Elephants and mice, 大象、老鼠
Cars and trucks 車、卡車
And he began to pull and pinch 他開始捏黏土
His ball of clay. 變成一個球
But the teacher said, "Wait!" 但是老師說﹕“等一下﹗”
"It is not time to begin!" “還不能開始﹗”
And she waited until everyone looked ready. 她等到大家都準備好了
"Now," said the teacher, 她說﹕“好﹗現在開始﹗”
"We are going to make a dish." “我們今天要做一個盤子”
"Good!" thought the little boy, “太好了﹗”小男孩心裡想
He liked to make dishes. 他很喜歡做盤子
And he began to make some 他開始做
That were all shapes and sizes. 很多形狀和大小的盤子
But the teacher said "Wait!" 但是老師說﹕“等一下﹗”
"And I will show you how." “讓我告訴你們怎麼做”
And she showed everyone how to make 她開始教大家怎麼做
One deep dish. 一個很深的盤子
"There," said the teacher, “像這樣”老師說
"Now you may begin." “你們可以開始了”
The little boy looked at the teacher's dish; 小男孩看了看老師的盤子
Then he looked at his own. 再看了看他自己的盤子
He liked his better than the teacher's 他比較喜歡自己的盤子
But he did not say this. 但是他沒有說出口
He just rolled his clay into a big ball again 他只是把他的黏土揉成了一個球
And made a dish like the teacher's. 做了個跟老師一樣的盤子
It was a deep dish. 一個很深的盤子
And pretty soon 很快的
The little boy learned to wait, 小男孩學會了等待
And to watch 學會了看
And to make things just like the teacher. 學會了做出和老師一樣的東西
And pretty soon 很快的
He didn't make things of his own anymore. 他不做自己的東西了
